NEWS FLASH!

Tango in the Spring 2010 is confirmed! 1-4 October 2010.

Tango in the Spring in 2008 was great. And we took a break in 2009.

Lots of people have been asking when bookings will open for Tango in the Spring 2010. We’d love to say “now”, but just give us a week or so to get the website updated. (apart from this page, everything else here is from 2008!)

But, put the dates aside, and start making travel plans — its the first weekend in October. Its a long weekend for ACT & NSW, and maybe people from other states might be able to make it a long weekend too.

We’ve found billets for quite a few people, but the supply is drying up. So if you think you might want a billet, send us an email now to billets@tangointhespring.org.au, telling us when you are coming, and any special requests. With enough notice, we still might be able to find a place. If we do,  we’ll get in touch and let you know if someone has a spare room - then you can work out the details with them.

And hotels in Canberra are busy that weekend — it’s Spring, it’s a long weekend in the ACT, it’s Floriade, there’s a tango festival on — all good reasons to come, but accommodation, especially the cheaper end, will probably book out. There’s some information and links on our Accommodation page, or maybe try the ACT Tourism site.

There’s a lot of activities in Tango in the Spring, and the milongas go late, but you will need somewhere to sleep!

Remember, this is a fundraiser for rural Argentine schools, put on by local charity Puente Austral.  So think of it as giving back to Argentina, as well as having a great lunch before practica!

Vegetarian Menu

• Entree: an Empanada de Humita (corn, capsicum, onion and tomato)
• Tarta de spinacas y queso con pimiento y ceboll (Spinach and cheese pie with capsicum and onion) 
• Tofu (marinated in soy sauce)
• Zucchini and  eggplant brochettes
• salad and bread
• 1 alfajor with pasta frola as dessert

Beer, wine and soft drinks will be on sale.

The asado menu includes:

• 1 empanada as entrée,
• Chorizo (Argentinean sausage),
• Morcilla (black pouding),
• costillas (beef ribs),
• chicken kebabs,
• costillitas de cerdo (pork spare ribs),
• salad and bread,
• 1 alfajor with pasta frola as dessert

Puente Austral is a non-profit organisation which is managed and run by volunteers to raise funds to support rural Argentine schools.  They fund projects such as establishing vegetable gardenS, and bakeries for schools, and also sponsor those schools by sending textbooks, school material (pens, pencils, and notebooks), heaters, fans and other items that are in need. They sponsored three schools and funded seven projects since July 2005.  All profit from this event will go to build schools in a remote area of Argentina.

The asado will be at the same venue as the practica on Saturday — St Johns Church Hall.  So you can get some sustenance, then  practice!   Book now - don’t miss out on the ribs!

Ever wondered how El Arranque came about? As part of “Argentine Month in Canberra”, Tango in the Spring in association with University of Canberra and the Embassy of Argentina present the tango documentary film “Si Sos Brujo: Una Historia de Tango” . 

Friday 3 October at the University of Canberra (Building 2 Lecture theatre 2B11). It’s just before the opening milonga in the building next door - and after the film, you’ll be first in line to sample the complimentary Argentine wine and and snacks.
